simplify : decluttering my makeup

For the past month or two I’ve been on a decluttering mission. Purging things left and right. Earlier this week, I decided to tackle my makeup collection or what is left of it since the last time I went through it. Above is what I started out with. 20 or so lip products, 20+ nail polishes, 5 blushes etc.

This is what I pared it down to. The only thing not pictured are two eyeliners. It’s not as minimalist as I’d like it to be. As much as I am striving for simplicity I will always be a girl who loves her makeup. All of this fits nice and neat into a travel bag that is now hanging on the back of my bathroom door. No more sorting through multiple makeup bags to find what I’m looking for and my sink is no longer cluttered with products.

These are my everyday products. I may use more or less depending on the day but overall these are my go-tos. I won’t link to everything here but I will say that the Urban Decay Naked Palette is the best purchase I’ve made when it comes to makeup. I can’t live without Benefit High Beam Highlighter(a must for this tired mama), Smashbox Brow Tech (thanks for the thin brows thyroid) and Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in Rose is always in my handbag.

These four come in handy if I’m feeling fancy or going on the rare date night. From left to right: Revlon Super Lustrous Creme Lipstick Fire & Ice, MAC Lady Danger, Flower Cosmetics Gloss in Iris I Could Fly and Stila Lip Glaze in Pout.

Going from 20+ polishes to 6 was major for me. These are the ones I wear the most and so they get to stay. From left to right: Essie Good To Go! – Fast Dry Top CoatEssie Mint Candy AppleEssie Vanity Fairest, OPI Big Apple Red, Sephora by OPI Only Gold For Me

Tips to Declutter Your Makeup Bag:

1. Check the expiration dates of products:

  • Mascara: 2-3 months
  • Liquid foundation and concealer: 6-12 months
  • Lipstick and lip gloss: 2 years for lipstick, 1 year for gloss
  • Nail polish: 1-2 years
  • Powder, eye shadow and blush: 2 years
  • Pencil products: up to 3 years with regular sharpening
  • Cream eye shadow and blush: around 1 year

2. Give or throw away any products you don’t use/wear

If you haven’t used it in ages or the color doesn’t suit you it’s time to say goodbye!

3. Use up what you have

Everyone has those almost finished products. Use them up before buying a replacement. This will keep your stash free of duplicates.

4. Clean your products

Once you’ve narrowed down your makeup collection to your favorite and most used products, wipe them down! It will keep your products looking nice and new and your makeup case clean. It is also so important to clean your brushes!

On our way home from a long day out, screams for ice cream started coming from the back seat. Our little love is seriously addicted lately! When we ask her what she wants to eat 9 times out of 10 the answer will be ice cream. Weaver’s was right there so we had to stop. We love it there and anything that will make a toddler screaming end, you can count me in. Especially if it involves a cold treat.

Weaver’s Ice Cream is a local favorite. It is the cutest shop filled with vintage signage/decor. It’s located right across the river from our little town and their ice cream and pizza are a regular treat for our family. Shayne and I have been going since we were little and it’s a ton of fun to take Isley now. She’s been in a green phase so she went with her mama’s favorite flavor…pistachio. Of course no trip to Weaver’s is complete without a ride on the mini carousel!

Knoebels Grove has always been one of our favorite places to go. We’ve spent so many summer days and evenings there over our seventeen years together. We’ve gone as a family of three since 2012 but this was the first year that Isley could get on a few rides all by herself. Shayne and I were ridiculously happy and totally geeking out watching our little gal go round and round on every car ride she could find.

Aside from the car rides, we rode the kiddie carousel (only a horse that stays still will do for now), watched a concert and took our photobooth pictures. The photobooth at Knoebels has been a tradition for us since I was sixteen and we have quite the collection at this point. I’m planning on scanning all of the photo strips soon and will have to share here.

We’d like to visit at least one more time before Summer comes to an end and during the fun Halloween festivities. I think Grammy will tag along next time so that Shayne and I can ride a few of our favorite rides like old times. See you soon Knoebels!

our clubfoot journey : a few of our favorite things

Awhile back I shared our must haves for the baby stages of casting and brace wear. Now that Isley is two I wanted to share a few new favorite things and some of the old ones that are still working for us. Our number one favorite thing is Isley’s Mitchell boots in the pink color! The color gets her excited to wear her shoes and makes the bedtime routine go much smoother. She calls them her “pink shoes” and “night night shoes”. To me this is the cutest thing ever! For you mamas of boys they also come in blue and of course the standard gray color. You can order them from MD Orthopaedics yourself but your doctor should have no problem ordering them for you.

These books have been amazing for us! Isley loves to “read” them herself while she gets her shoes put on. She is typically very good about getting her shoes on but we have had the occasional fussy night and reading one of these books usually does the trick. You can find Wear your boots Ted and Let us Count The Things on amazon. My Clever Night-Night Shoes and Dreamland: Jungle Dreamare next on our list to purchase.

Bar Bumpers are so great! They soften the blow of your child’s bar banging against your legs, protect the bar from damage and protect their crib from damage as well. They are fleece lined and snap on to the bar. The best part is that Bar Bumpers can be personalized with your little ones name and favorite thing!

Isley was getting some pretty bad sores and blistering where the middle strap of her shoe is. We contacted the Orthotics department and they gave us these little miracles. Pressure saddles, sometimes called “pringles” because of their shape, reduce the pressure from the brace and keep the child’s skin healthy.

Oldies but goodies:

1.  We are still using the XL size of Halo Sleepsacks. Isley loves them and since she is still in her crib they help a bit with muffling the clanking. I don’t know what we’ll do when she outgrows them!!!

2.  Gold Bond Ultimate Comfort Body Powder – Helps keep little feet dry and helps to prevent blisters while wearing the brace.

3.  For socks we are still using Old Navy Little Bundles, Old Navy Crew Socks and Fruit of the Loom crew socks.

Isley's Second Birthday

On Isley’s birthday we threw a small birthday bash at our apartment. Since we don’t have a ton of space we kept the guest list small. Grandparent, Aunts, Uncles, cousins and close friends. I kept the decorations fairly simple too. We used streamers and balloons in shades of peach, gold and mint green and a cute banner from the Oh Joy line at Target. Shayne baked the cake and there was ice cream, chips and pink lemonade. Just like last year Isley wanted nothing to do with her cake. Just ice cream and chips for her!

This birthday party was such a relief compared to last year when we went all out renting a space, serving a full meal and inviting so many people. The goal this time around was small, sweet and simple and I think we nailed it. The birthday girl had a blast and it was wonderful to be surrounded by all of the people that love her so much. We are all three truly blessed.
